Hi! I am Petrea Nelson of Dogwood Designs and this is the story of how I turned my creative passion into a dream job. I am a 23 year old entrepreneur and college student, even though I look like I’m 12. I started Dogwood Designs in June of 2016.

I have two wonderful parents that have supported and guided me with this adventure. I have completely taken over their spare bedroom, back patio, garage, and side of the house. Even after the take-over, they have been nothing but supportive. And I know they get frustrated with the mess sometimes. (Thanks Mom and Dad!)

Luckily for me, my mother is extremely talented. She has fostered and helped me grow creatively my whole life. For as long as I can remember we have always had a “craft closet” somewhere in the house, no matter how many times we moved. (Go Army!) Originally, I was making signs for myself, family, and friends as a way for me to stay creative while I was working and going to school. I am the happiest when I am creating.

I had worked with Luanne in the past and when she asked if I would follow her to help manage her own store, Rustic Journeys, there was no doubt that this was meant to be. I have never been happier! Once Luanne introduced me to Dixie Belle there was no turning back. I was in love! Everything pretty much fell into place after that. I started with a small little booth in the store selling a few signs, to a booth that is now 3 times bigger.

I wouldn’t have been able to grow or create without the help of my father. He is my master builder and the other half of Dogwood Designs. I absolutely love working with him. No matter what crazy idea I come up with, he always is willing to help me bring it to life. (So far, we both still have all 10 fingers. Sort of.)

Now that the people of Dogwood Designs are out of the way, lets talk about the dogs behind the operation. My fur babies! My first dog is Daisy May. I got her after my father came back from deployment 10 years ago. She is a perfect and sweet little girl. My father is even head-over-heels in love with this 6-pound bichon/poodle mix. She lives with my parents no matter how many times I try to steal her. She needs to come home with me, but my dad won’t give her up! Since I work in my parents’ house I see her almost every day. Now to the second love of my life. (Sorry Casey…) My boyfriend of 6 years and I have an 80 pound lovable, goofy, dog named Storm. He is the main reason why I work so hard. We live in a tiny apartment now, but we are saving up for a house with a yard for Storm to enjoy. We also plan on fostering other dogs in the future.

Dogwood Designs is the product of my favorite things; creativity and DOGS! Well, one more than the other.
